Portrait of Benjamin León Jr.
by César Santalo

Created in honor of the anniversary of León Medical Centers, this striking portrait of founder Benjamin León Jr. is composed of more than 2,300 meticulously hand-cut photographic pieces. Each fragment represents an employee of León Medical Centers, arranged alphabetically in counterclockwise order, encircling the portrait and symbolizing the individuals who uphold the company’s values every day.

The face of Mr. León is formed from images of his family members, as well as the executives and managers who have helped guide the organization’s growth. Framing the composition is the León Medical Centers logo, anchoring the work in the mission of the institution: to deliver compassionate, high-quality healthcare rooted in dignity and community.

Measuring 4.5 feet wide by 8.5 feet tall, the collage is not only a tribute to a leader, but also to the people behind the name—those who make León Medical Centers exceptional.

The artist, César Santalo, is a renowned Cuban American collage artist, selected for this project because of his deep cultural connection and artistic vision. Like León Medical Centers, Santalo’s story is one shaped by Cuban heritage, resilience, and dedication to service. His selection for this commemorative piece underscores the shared cultural identity and values that define both the artist and the organization.

This portrait stands as a lasting tribute to a legacy built on people, purpose, and pride.
